Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need a license to drive an electric motorcycle?

A: Yes you are. You need a motorcycle license to drive any electric motorcycle. However, this does not apply to e-bikes. E-bikes do not require a license. However, laws vary from region to region.

Q: What is the difference between an electric bicycle and an electric motorcycle?

A: Electric bikes operate like a traditional push bike, with an electric motor to assist you. With an electric motorcycle, there is no need to pedal. All movements are controlled by the throttle. While you don't need a special license for an e-bike, a motorcycle license allows you to operate a two-wheeled motorcycle. However, this does not include cars, three-wheelers, or any other type of vehicle. Therefore, having a car license does not give you the legal right to ride a motorcycle.

Q: What type of license is required for an electric motorcycle?

A: Motorcycle licenses in each region are divided into two categories: Class M1 and Class M2. The type of license you need depends on the size and type of your bike.
*M1 Class License - This allows you to drive any type of electric motorcycle. These include electric motorcycles with more than 150cc horsepower, electric mopeds and electric scooters.
*Class M2 license - more restrictive. A Class M2 license allows you to operate a moped (a motorcycle with pedals) or any motorized bicycle that does not exceed a speed of 30 miles per hour.
*Category C License - This type of license is usually for cars. However, if your electric motorcycle has a sidecar attached or has three wheels, you will need a Class C license.
With this in mind, we recommend that you obtain a Class M1 license. This allows you to ride any type of electric motorcycle!

Q: What's the next step after getting your motorcycle license?

A: The next step is to buy an electric motorcycle! However, let's assume that this is obvious and that you already have a cute two-wheeler that you really want to ride. After obtaining a motorcycle license, you need to purchase electric motorcycle insurance and then complete the electric motorcycle registration with a specific government department. These are very important. If you do not complete all of these steps, you are violating the law and endangering yourself and others. Depending on your region, there are slightly different ways to register an electric motorcycle.

Q: What options are there when it comes to electric motorcycles?

A: There are lots of manufacturers of electric motorcycles around the world and it is a forever growing number. At present, the easiest way to split them up is to categorise them as lets say "Full Power Motorcycles", "Learner Legal", and "off-road". The "Full Power Motorcycles" are the larger, bigger powered bikes made by major manufacturers, producing high quality and high performance bikes. When it comes to the "Learner Legal" sector there are lots and lots of brands emerging all the time. Mostly these are designed and manufactured in China and other parts of Asia, and are lower powered, smaller battery, bikes made to a budget, and aimed at the commuter and younger end of the market. There are some larger manufacturers in the field, but new brands are always emerging. For the "off-road" segment, there are some great bikes from some well-known manufacturers.

Q: Do electric motorcycles need to pay road tax in the UK?

A: No, not in the UK at the moment. You will still need to notify the DVLA / VOSA that you are "taxing" the vehicle, but the fee will be £0. It must then be updated annually like any vehicle.

Q: How to charge an electric motorcycle?

A: Electric motorcycles can be charged in 1 or 2 of 4 ways.
Standard wall outlet - slowest charging method
*Type 1 Charging - "Type 1" refers to the plug shape and speed capabilities of charging through that plug type.
*Type 2 Charging - "Type 2" refers to the plug shape and charging speed capabilities of that plug type. This is the most common and currently used plug type on electric vehicles (cars and bikes).
*DC Fast Charging - This is the fastest charging method and has been adopted by new electric bikes.

Q: Where can I charge my electric motorcycle?

A: The answer to this question lies in what charging capabilities the bike has. Every electric motorcycle currently available can be charged at home using a standard wall plug. If you look at Type 1 and Type 2 charging, these chargers are probably a lot more common than most people initially think. Some countries, such as the UK, have seen a 50% increase in the number of chargers available over the past 12 months, and this number continues to grow at a fairly steady rate. As a result, the number of charging points available will only increase. Of course, these chargers can be found at motorway services, petrol stations, pubs, restaurants, offices, retail parks, tourist attractions and millions of other places. Plus, if you wish, you can of course install a home charger for faster charging at home.

Q: Is it possible to customise and modify an electric motorcycle?

A: Yes of course. Most manufacturers, like us, will build a variety of modified and customized electric motorcycles for you. You just need to tell them your specific needs.

Q: How efficient is an electric motorcycle?

A: Electric motors are around 95% efficient vs around 25% for petrol and diesel engines. In other words, 75% of the fuel burnt by a combustion engine is wasted, which is bad news for your pocket and terrible for the environment.

Q: How long do electric motorcycles last?

A: In general, electric motorcycles are known for having fewer moving parts compared to ICE bikes, which can contribute to increased reliability and longevity. With proper maintenance and care, electric motors can last well over 160,000 kms (100,000 miles).

Q: Are electric motorcycles noisy?

A: A street-legal electric motorcycle is naturally quieter than a gas-powered motorcycle. The reason being is that they don't need a muffler for exhaust. That isn't to say that they are completely quiet, but they produce less noise than even the quietest of gas-powered bikes.

Q: Are electric motorbikes waterproof?

A: While your electric motorbike might be water resistant, it is not waterproof. You want to avoid poodles and potholes that will cause your bike to be submerged in water. Think about it like this. Your mobile phone may survive if it quickly falls into water and you snatch it out.

Q: Do electric motorcycles have transmission gears?

A: Electric motorcycles are generally (but not always) single-speed, meaning you have no gears to shift. They aren't automatic transmission since there isn't any shifting, but it's fairly analogous to comparing a car with a manual transmission to one with an automatic transmission.

Q: How does an electric motorcycle work?

A: The electric motorcycle operates based on an electromagnet installed on a shaft - a rotor - which is a crucial component of their mechanics. Electricity supplied by rechargeable batteries then powers the engines. The electrical power in e-motorcycles is much cleaner and more environmentally friendly.

Q: What motor does an electric motorcycle use?

A: Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) is the most modern motor used in electric two-wheelers. It is an AC synchronous motor used for higher efficiency applications in electric vehicles. Its function depends on the rotating magnetic field of the stator and the constant magnetic field of the rotor.

Q: How many volts does an electric motorcycle use?

A: While the specific voltage can vary depending on the manufacturer and model, most electric motorcycles operate on voltages ranging from 48V to 96V or even higher. The higher voltage allows for greater power output and higher maximum speeds, offering a more exhilarating riding experience.

Q: Are electric motorcycles heavy?

A: On average, an electric motorcycle without batteries typically weighs between 400 and 600 pounds (181 and 272 kilograms). However, it's worth noting that weight may increase when the battery is included, as it adds an additional 100 to 200 pounds (45 to 91 kilograms) to the overall weight of the motorcycle.
